  • Australia Palinurid Lobster Diets Palinurid lobsters, a genus of subtropical and temperate spiny lobsters, range from the southeast African coast to southwest Indian Ocean and from the northeastern Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The genus has five species: Palinurus gilchristi, P. delagoae, P. elephas, P. charlestoni and P. mauritanicus. From Abstract: The closed-cycle rearing of palinurid lobsters in commercially relevant quantities currently represents one of the most difficult challenges facing modern-day aquaculture. The length and complexity of their larval life cycle exacerbate the problem and represent the major bottleneck to their successful farming. The general consensus is that developments in nutrition research will provide the necessary breakthroughs to make the closed-cycle rearing of palinurids a reality. Due to the cryptic nature of their feeding preferences and complex larval morphology, a commercially formulated feed for their culture does not exist. Nevertheless,
  • Vietnam Diseases in Lobster Cages, Again Seafood.com Reports: For the second straight year, farmers raising spiny lobsters in Khanh Hoa Province are suffering huge losses due to high production costs and diseases. In Van Ninh Commune, the number of lobster-farming households has decreased to 533 this from 800 last year, when the Commune operated 7,000 sea cages. Even with lobster prices rising to around $57 a kilogram this year from $38.10 a kilogram last year, individual farmers are losing from $9,524 to $28,574 for each failed crop, depending on the number of cages being farmed. During the 2011-2012 season, farmer Huynh Van Thuong stocked 5,000 lobsters, but lost 60% of them due to milky haemolymph syndrome (MHS, a bacterial infection), incurring a loss of about $28,574. A farmer with approximately 5,000 lobsters in his cages has to invest over $100,000 to purchase juvenile seedstock and feed. With the diminishing supplies of wild juveniles, prices for seedstock have doubled to
  • Tasmania is an island state off the southeast coast of Australia. There are dozens of species of rock lobster (often called spiny lobsters) around the world. Most of the species considered for aquaculture are in the Jasus and Panulirus genera. In Eastern Malaysia, Darden Restaurants has embarked on a long-term, $650 million, joint venture to farm Panulirus ornatus, the ornate rock lobster. Sources: 1. • Shrimp News: What’s the name of the town in Sabah, East Malaysia, where your lobster farm will be located? Rich Jeffers: Semporna. Shrimp News: What species of lobster will you be growing at the farm? Rich Jeffers: Panulirus ornatus, a spiny lobster. Shrimp News: One of first news reports that came out on the project said that in conjunction with the lobster farm there would be a large area dedicated to mussel farming. Will the mussels be used to feed the lobsters? Rich Jeffers: They will be one of the feed components. Shrimp News: Who’s going to develop the lobster hatchery for the project in Malaysia? Rich Jeffers: Darden owns the proprietary science for the development of the hatchery. We will own and operate it. One thing about the project that I would like to stress is that it’s just getting started. We don’t expect to begin harvesting animals until 2017. Another thing that I would like to point out is that we’re not going to stop serving the North American

  • Prior to shipping they were chilled down by 10ºF over a period of a few hours to reduce their metabolism and bring down their core internal temperature. I still use this technique today when air shipping live Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) from the Caribbean to Hong Kong and China. Inside the box, I would place a one-inch layer of dry expanded excelsior (wood wool, wood shavings) on the bottom of the Styrofoam box. American Excelsior is the only company that sells this product. Its fiber comes from the aspen tree, is non-toxic and has no chemical residues. The compressed bales come in two sizes, full bales and pony bales, and need to be fully expanded before use. You just pull them apart by hand. Next, I would add a layer of chilled shrimp and then cover them with another layer of expanded excelsior that had been dipped in chilled seawater and shaken out to remove any excess water. I would continue this process for several layers (depending on the size of the box), topping
  • After getting his master’s degree, he went to the Virgin Islands, and did a yearlong study on spiny lobsters and their migration patterns. From 1972 to 1974, he was enrolled in a Ph.D. program at the University of California, Davis, in aquatic ecology. Tony Schuur, currently an aquaculture/shrimp farming consultant, was in the same program. Steve never completed the Ph.D. program. He felt that he just didn’t need it to do what he wanted to do. Later, however, after he left Solar Aquafarms, he thought about restarting his Ph.D., but didn’t, and later said that that was a mistake. In grad school, he worked with lobsters, but shifted to freshwater prawns when he realized that lobster farming was not going to be feasible. He started Solar Aquafarms in 1973 with Dominick. The seeds of SAF had been planted in 1969-70, down in San Diego, when Steve moved into Dominick’s “Huron Labs” house, where they built their first miniscale backyard greenhouse and closed-system, multitrophic-

  • Lobster Harvest leads the world in lobster hatchery technology. It recently embarked on a lobster farming project in Sabah, Malaysia, that will grow hatchery-produced, slipper lobsters in floating sea cages. Its hatchery-produced spiny lobsters will also be tested at the pilot farm.
